Reflections On India

December 13, 2009

Sean Paul Kelley

If you are Indian, or of Indian descent, I must preface this post with a clear warning: you are not going to like what I have to say. My criticisms may be very hard to stomach. But consider them as the hard words and loving advice of a good friend. Someone who’s being honest with you and wants nothing from you. These criticisms apply to all of India except Kerala and the places I didn’t visit, except that I have a feeling it applies to all of India, except as I mentioned before, Kerala. Lastly, before anyone accuses me of Western Cultural Imperialism, let me say this: if this is what India and Indians want, then hey, who am I to tell them differently. Take what you like and leave the rest. In the end it doesn’t really matter, as I get the sense that Indians, at least many upper class Indians, don’t seem to care and the lower classes just don’t know any better, what with Indian culture being so intense and pervasive on the sub-continent. But here goes, nonetheless.

India is a mess. It’s that simple, but it’s also quite complicated. I’ll start with what I think are India’s four major problems–the four most preventing India from becoming a developing nation–and then move to some of the ancillary ones.

First, pollution. In my opinion the filth, squalor and all around pollution indicates a marked lack of respect for India by Indians. I don’t know how cultural the filth is, but it’s really beyond anything I have ever encountered. At times the smells, trash, refuse and excrement are like a garbage dump. Right next door to the Taj Mahal was a pile of trash that smelled so bad, was so foul as to almost ruin the entire Taj experience. Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai to a lesser degree were so very polluted as to make me physically ill. Sinus infections, ear infection, bowels churning was an all to common experience in India. Dung, be it goat, cow or human fecal matter was common on the streets. In major tourist areas filth was everywhere, littering the sidewalks, the roadways, you name it. Toilets in the middle of the road, men urinating and defecating anywhere, in broad daylight. Whole villages are plastic bag wastelands. Roadsides are choked by it. Air quality that can hardly be called quality. Far too much coal and far to few unleaded vehicles on the road. The measure should be how dangerous the air is for one’s health, not how good it is. People casually throw trash in the streets, on the roads. The only two cities that could be considered sanitary in my journey were Trivandrum–the capital of Kerala–and Calicut. I don’t know why this is. But I can assure you that at some point this pollution will cut into India’s productivity, if it already hasn’t. The pollution will hobble India’s growth path, if that indeed is what the country wants. (Which I personally doubt, as India is far too conservative a country, in the small ‘c’ sense.)

The second issue, infrastructure, can be divided into four subcategories: roads, rails and ports and the electrical grid. The electrical grid is a joke. Load shedding is all too common, everywhere in India. Wide swaths of the country spend much of the day without the electricity they actually pay for. With out regular electricity, productivity, again, falls. The ports are a joke. Antiquated, out of date, hardly even appropriate for the mechanized world of container ports, more in line with the days of longshoremen and the like. Roads are an equal disaster. I only saw one elevated highway that would be considered decent in Thailand, much less Western Europe or America. And I covered fully two thirds of the country during my visit. There are so few dual carriage way roads as to be laughable. There are no traffic laws to speak of, and if there are, they are rarely obeyed, much less enforced. A drive that should take an hour takes three. A drive that should take three takes nine. The buses are at least thirty years old, if not older. Everyone in India, or who travels in India raves about the railway system. Rubbish. It’s awful. Now, when I was there in 2003 and then late 2004 it was decent. But in the last five years the traffic on the rails has grown so quickly that once again, it is threatening productivity. Waiting in line just to ask a question now takes thirty minutes. Routes are routinely sold out three and four days in advance now, leaving travelers stranded with little option except to take the decrepit and dangerous buses. At least fifty million people use the trains a day in India. 50 million people! Not surprising that waitlists of 500 or more people are common now. The rails are affordable and comprehensive but they are overcrowded and what with budget airlines popping up in India like Sadhus in an ashram the middle and lowers classes are left to deal with the overutilized rails and quality suffers. No one seems to give a shit. Seriously, I just never have the impression that the Indian government really cares. Too interested in buying weapons from Russia, Israel and the US I guess.

The last major problem in India is an old problem and can be divided into two parts that’ve been two sides of the same coin since government was invented: bureaucracy and corruption. It take triplicates to register into a hotel. To get a SIM card for one’s phone is like wading into a jungle of red-tape and photocopies one is not likely to emerge from in a good mood, much less satisfied with customer service. Getting train tickets is a terrible ordeal, first you have to find the train number, which takes 30 minutes, then you have to fill in the form, which is far from easy, then you have to wait in line to try and make a reservation, which takes 30 minutes at least and if you made a single mistake on the form back you go to the end of the queue, or what passes for a queue in India. The government is notoriously uninterested in the problems of the commoners, too busy fleecing the rich, or trying to get rich themselves in some way shape or form. Take the trash for example, civil rubbish collection authorities are too busy taking kickbacks from the wealthy to keep their areas clean that they don’t have the time, manpower, money or interest in doing their job. Rural hospitals are perennially understaffed as doctors pocket the fees the government pays them, never show up at the rural hospitals and practice in the cities instead.

I could go on for quite some time about my perception of India and its problems, but in all seriousness, I don’t think anyone in India really cares. And that, to me, is the biggest problem. India is too conservative a society to want to change in any way. Mumbai, India’s financial capital is about as filthy, polluted and poor as the worst city imaginable in Vietnam, or Indonesia–and being more polluted than Medan, in Sumatra is no easy task. The biggest rats I have ever seen were in Medan!

One would expect a certain amount of, yes, I am going to use this word, backwardness, in a country that hasn’t produced so many Nobel Laureates, nuclear physicists, imminent economists and entrepreneurs. But India has all these things and what have they brought back to India with them? Nothing. The rich still have their servants, the lower castes are still there to do the dirty work and so the country remains in stasis. It’s a shame. Indians and India have many wonderful things to offer the world, but I’m far from sanguine that India will amount to much in my lifetime.

Now, have at it, call me a cultural imperialist, a spoiled child of the West and all that. But remember, I’ve been there. I’ve done it. And I’ve seen 50 other countries on this planet and none, not even Ethiopia, have as long and gargantuan a laundry list of problems as India does. And the bottom line is, I don’t think India really cares. Too complacent and too conservative.

  1. Very true.

  2. :))) so cut the shit & stop living in the bollywood world…. Loved It when he said been there & seen it all… Rubbish … Something I have been saying to all deceptive Indian baboons…

Indians have declared themselves the superpower of shit and that’s their inside and out and after all it is superpower but with a huge stink. The writer of the Article has also declared India the superpower even bigger than Ethiopia so what if India is full of shit!!!!

    • Moreover watch slumdog millionaire.Thats reality in bombay.Unfortunately majority of ppl living in those slums r muslims.u know y??? cuz muslims in india r slaves? and the fun thing is that muslims in india do not know that they r treated as slaves.

      • Thing is most so-called top Indian actor’s have Muslim names so to prove they’re not discriminated against. However most have Hindu partners and indulge in idoltary like Shahrukh Khan to keep the majority happy.

      you zimbly know πŸ˜€ :D…lol

  8. Well said, being in India i know this is true, moreover if u ride a train u will see so many smelling sadhus and that too without ticket. My guess why India don’t care is that the upper caste hindus who constitute about 15% r living good life+plus sikhs(commonly known as sardars) and christians in goa and kerala, jains and parsis r rich but they r in lakhs only.Muslims r almost 20% but hardly 1% of muslims r living middle class life.
Indian politicians r most corrupt in the world but comparing to many pakistani politicians (whose properties r in other countries) they don’t take dual citizenship.

  9. Great observation. I believe India will be the reason of her own undoing. What we see from outside as a success story is really an empty claim. India has not progressed the way Korea, Taiwan, Thailand,Malaysia etc had been.

I wonder what is the main cause of India’s backwardness and stark poverty. If you look at other nations of the world, majority of them have progressed and are respected in the world: Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Middleast, Turkey, Spain, Brazil, etc but India remains the lowest of the low.

One obvious reason, in my opinion, is rampant corruption to the point that it is considered normal. The other would be the caste system in which people accept that there will always be some people for whom life is not kind. They keep them there and not allow them to move up in society. I am referring to Dalit oppression here. There are some who are not supposed to be EVEN seen. They are called unseeables. These poor folks go about their business at night (e.g. to wash laundry etc)

At least, Pakistan is not as dirty as India. Thanks to less poverty and less population. We, at least, don’t have adult males taking dump on the streets in the open. How disgusting!!!!

With Sean’s description of India, I really have no desire left to visit India. I know that all the fun of travel will be offset by all the problems and challenges one has to face in day to day life of India.

    • Asher the obvious reason is brahmin mentality.brahmin and uper caste hindus dont want the wealth to be shared. Its nothing but the superiority complex of upper caste hindus which is why big cities in india r slums.

      • It’s also got much to do with karma and the belief in reincarnation that the current status of a person in this life is determined by how they lived their previous one.

A logical mind can never accept the philosophy of backdated punishment for unknown reasons which one doesn’t even remember yet is forced to accept. Thus the downtrodden and deprived community in India are seen as people who deserve to be punished for what they did in their previous life!!.

      • Imran, good point. Christianity has a similar problem as well: original sin. It’s not quite as all encompassing as karma, but it still leads to all kinds of perverse outcomes in America.

  10. If India were ever interested to truly and seriously shed the slumdog image, it would take its elite to read, write and talk like Mr Kelley. And this is why it’ll never happen. They’re too proud of their… nothing really. And why not, who really gives a shit right.

Pakistanis, draw your lessons and refrain from ever becoming like that. Islam teaches us to restrain in holding up pride. We must prosper, though prosper in modesty and humility. Or else prosperity does not mean anything.

  11. Ohhh how westerners love it, squalor, filth, dirt, garbage in the third world or their colonial empires which they had soo lovingly nurtured and provided jannat to us all!!!!

O ooo so woe is me that India is till developing.
It still cannot get its act together!!

O i pity the generous white man, how will he ever see India develop!

ooo aaahh ,bugger almost has an orgasm on poverty!!

Are yaar India mein itni muskill hai to itna aata kyon hai yahan!!

The blogger, that what he is a blogger seems to be sideswiped by India.

The problems of India are real and part of any developing economy.

Its not as if the British provided India with a glorious infrastructure. Brits love to claim how modern institutions were bequeathed to India.

    Yes some were.

BUT ultimately the colonial enterprise had focused aims.

Create a subservient elite, a repressed mass and an infrastructure geared only for military aims and for transportation of valuable raw materials out of the colonies.

It is India, which now tries to retrieve itself.

And to the umbrage of the sanctimonious pious westerner who perhaps developed at the press of a burden and NOT on the free slave labor and the ultimate plunder of natural resources of colonies which kick started the western industrial revolution.

But he has some funny weird notions also.

Cell phones, land lines being difficult to get!!!!

Where or when did he visit!!!!

The Indian cell market, in scope, size and operations in SECOND ONLY TO CHINA!!!

IN 2008 India surpassed the USA in the CELL PHONE area:

India presently has 400 million cell phones subscribers, its growing at a pace amongst the HIGHEST in the world!

And Kelly ji is worried how bureaucratic it is to get an Indian SIM.

All that ones need to get a SIM is a photograph, identity proof and a valid address and the time taken to fill a form. THATS IT in 15 minutes or less yu walk out with a phone, SIM and anything else yu need to buy!!

If in these days of terrorism and when cell phones are a favourite means to detonate bombs, Kelly ji finds that bureaucratic!!!

Maybe in his advanced westthey have done away with such documents!

The railway train bit is even more laughable!

Maybe a village bumpkin may not but at least a westerner may know how to operate a computer or at least visit a cyber cafe present in any part of of Urban, semi urban and even rural India.

For most of Indian Railway tickets are booked online on the Net or from mobile phones or travel agents.

Every detail from enquiry, booking, cancellation, is done online.

Yu can get the tickets delivered to your place or just take a printout!

Wonder what more Kelly ji wants!!!!

Maybe a brown coolie delivering it on a silver platter to him bowing deep in subservience!

And so on India’s antiquated ports which cannot handle containers mechanically cause him such worry!!!

Despite the ancient ports Indian port still figure in the top 50 busiest container ports , which are the mechanized one.

One can go on and on about the rapid strides by which the infrastructure is developing.

But lets not cause more heartburn to Kelly Ji.

BTW in his blog Kelly ji does not seems to vae visited Pakistan!

Oh he missed the sweet smelling, uncrowded , luxurious train travel provided by the pakistan railways.

    No reservation required.

Also please note how pristine clean the surroundings are.
There are plenty pf pak pics on poverty.

But it looks foolish for all south Asians to poke fun at poverty since all of them have it.

    • @Rk Rajk who ever

Son no one takes a dump on the street in Pakistan the way you do in India. Or Cows / Pigs or Baboons dont roam in the city. You just cant stomach it even if it comes from some one outside can ya ? Thats against the Bollywood fantasy world that you want people to think about India or Indian.
So like I said if you dont give a rats a$$ about it then just go take a dump and value your indian culture of talking shit only where ever you go!
You say why you come here yaar? Maybe just for the kicks that there are far more worst places on the globe and things back home arent really that bad and thank God for it! Or must have been deceived by your movies and fantasy only to visit and receive a huge blow upon his visit that it is nothing like of the sort! The blogger cudnt have written it any better. Or should I add my experience aswell to it when i travelled to India. Only once I have been pick pocketed in my life that too in India or the first time openly asked for bribes was in India. Son stop living in a world of deception and accept your problems instead of dragging Pakistan to share your filth. I am sure you have never visited Pak and continue to blindly hate it. India as a bigger country is bound to have more problems, but hey having larger land or population doesnt Make China look like any filth. It is the sour truth that India had most of the infrastructure ready from the British rule and most of the established businesses as well something that Pakistan till date doesn’t have. But Sorry to say, that still with all the ahead start that India had and everything; didnt make it move even a milimeter from being called the A$$hole of the Globe! Thats what you have earned India by being ignorant and still continue to insist on your fantasy.

    • @RK,

Have the decency to take criticism constructively since it is only going to make YOU better. Things are not find and dandy in India. It is TERRIBLE. You guys have the WORST human rights record. Just by segregating lower caste Hindus, you commit blatant, open and ACCEPTED discrimination of almost half the Indians. Probably, this population of dalit could be equal or more to the whole population of Pakistan.

You can not stand tall just because your railways now offer online bookings or you have the most cell phones in the world. So what? You don’t manufacture cell phones. You spend (400 millians X $200) on those cell phones wasting precious foreign exchange. It is a pity that your government is buys spending money in either buying expensive weapons, spending to create unrest in neighboring countries or wasting money in corruption. What are you doing to control your population? What are you doing to control female infanticide? The sonography is used HEAVILY to abort female featuses creating huge gender disbalance leading to polyandry (one wife many husbands) which creates problems for the society. What are you doing to create jobs and industries in remote areas of India so that they don’t have any need to move to already crowded cosmopolatins.

What have you produced at home which is used by the world? What have you invented? Nothing. You are still a 3rd world country which is LOOOOOOOOONG ways from becoming a super power.

Stop blaming British for your woes. You achieved independance in 1947. You had plenty of time to be on your own. During this time Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan went from rags to riches.

It is still true the best of planning and developments were done by the British since they were an advanced society. They progressed at an even pace. They progressed EVENLY. It was not like, India which ace in military size or moviemaking but do shit in invention or originality or reduction of poverty. Britian was All-roundingly a Superpower just like USA is now (albeit for a short time).

You have the 2nd most densely populated country in the world. It gotta take toll on you. One of my Telugu coworker didn’t want to go back to India because of this huge population. He said there is people everywhere. It feels crowded and suffocated whereever you go. I can not imagine how it feels like but, at least, in Pakistan there is ample empty space between two people walking.

Thank God for gifting us Pakistan.

      • watch what u say. people like u and princess.babur only know how to critisize india. rectify the faults in ur country first.

    • Look, I have already stated in my post that India is making efforts to solve her problems and that poverty is a reality in ALL of South Asia(Pakistan included I presume).

And Bollywood does not happen to have the kind of impact it has on me as it does maybe in Pakistan or elsewhere.

I live in India, and I can see our reality BOTH good and bad.

I would assume that just as me, you would be having access to international television, the internet and print media.

So just as you analyse India, so do we analyse Pakistan .Its not as if the history of Pakistan ,what its does, its relations with the west and neighbours, its problems are some top secret things!

So there is no question of a blind hatred for Pakistan.
And BTW you ask do I come here for kicks?

I come here since you seem to attempt to do the same!!
Since there are so many posts on India in this blog .

So grow up and do some thinking on your own.

The problems I have are the obvious factual inaccuracies the blogger has stated in his blog, and which I have pointed out.

And the assertion that apart from oneself(Pakistan on this board) the other ie India is the repository of all th e filth and problems at home.

Hence the oft repeated remark, thank God for Pakistan or that we never have it so bad here!!!

When the fact is Pakistan also faces serious issues of health and sanitation. Visit the world bank sites and other such sites and you will find out that the problem is equally relevant for Pakistan.

Just as India has her posh areas and slums, so does Pakistan.

Google an image search ’pakistan slums’ and you will see.

In India due to her larger numbers the problems appear starker. And off course there are the naysayers who love to go on the trip,’yes there is software, industrialisation, high economic growth yadada in India, but what of her teeming slums, hungry millions and oh the woes of the entire earth.

But the cake is your take on corruption!!!!!!!!

Did you visit India before PAKISTAN!!!!

Ever heard of NRO or β€˜Crore β€˜commander or Mr 10%!!!!!

I would NEVER deny that there is no corruption in India.

But the bit that I got pick pocketed first in India or the first bribe I paid was in Inda TAKES the cake.

      Ever heard of transparency international??
It’s a corruption based index that ranks countries for their corruption!!

Ever care to check what Pakistan ranking is in that list:

      See this:

This is exactly the sanctimonious bullshit I was talking about.

Yaar are yu a grown up!
      Ever read the Pakistani newspapers.

Do you know what the National reconciliation ordinance was.Read:

      • Rajk,

Pakistanis never denied problems of Pakistan. If somebody constructively criticizes us on the problems that really happen in Pakistan, we have no issues. We will not send a rebuttal to prove how everything is fine.

On this blog and many other sites, Pakistanis have always accepted that corruption (due to corrupt politicians) to be our BIGGEST impediment to growth.

The troubles that we are seeing in Pakistan is sponsored by RAW.

      • @Rajk πŸ™‚

WO there!. From your message I bet while you were posting your response, there was some one taking a dump right next you with his a$$ towards you and looking back at you wondering what are you punching in to ? Son, NRO has been spoken of and the Supreme Court has blown it away! so there now u can analyse how much Pakistan is aware about the situation. FYI dear unlike you I have traveled alot in the Gulf & African Countries. With India like I said, have many relatives there and am a frequent visitor so I know well about the places there. I simply wrote my bad experience only, have a good experience as well and certainly can tell you a thing or two about other places also…

To keep it fair I have mentioned before and I recommend to all my Pakistani fellows as well. That they should visit India ONCE in their life. +ve we can learn many things & also value many things that we take for granted back home. Can get Amused & Entertained aswell as no doubt a billion people have a variety to offer in culture, language & places.
Be no fool by choosing to be ignorant that the system in well in India. The politicians a severly corrupt & overlook India’s problem.

Nothing personal; Neutrally I loved this article as it refreshed my 1st impression about the place ;). But hey i tend to find it vibrant anyway (when i see ppl taking a dump on the streets, railway line or whereever with cows, donkeys & monkeys moving around unescorted, different rituals & insane things, cousines / delicacies, art and much more) on every trip of mine. So chill man, I dont say Pakistan is all rosy things are a bit different here and amusing in other ways (which you need to experience) and what we are talking about here is on a Pakistani forum! It’s the same on your forums infact your media is doing it openly & directly on their websites. Atleast PKKH is on the net at moement only. I cant wait for them to go on TV! You my dear please don’t blindly post your comments based on your assumption about Pakistan. I can see that there are a few Pak bloggers who tend to do the same so they should take care aswell.
I think that people sometimes try to catch or go along with the wave!

Be a good reader and try to contribute +vely.

      • @Rajk,

You gave a link to a supposed declaration of Pakistan to be world’s most corrupt country.

Here is an equall matchin Indian trait proven by the world: LOL

      • Rofl, good one Asher!

      • πŸ™‚ Yes sumayyac, I was laughing too when I saw that for the first time.

It helps to keep things in perspective, you know!!! (lol)

      • completely agreed!

Go and find facts about pakistan and India!! Per capita income is far better than pakistan. Go to forbes list and see the pakistan’s no in all tally list! I beleve Mr. Sean is a pakistani and he is pretending to be like a gora!!

  12. its interesting how this website goes to any extent to deface india πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ .

But common sense says u will ignore this suggestion. Its not my fault when u guys are destroyed, dont say i dint warn u πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

    • @ SAL

    • @princess.babur

you still did not answer my qeustion princess πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ does pakistan have any train or metros?

  15. The only real answer I have to my critics here is this: feel free to visit my country and criticize all that you see wrong about it. I will be more than happy to listen and might even agree. I can hardly say the same for you. AS I wrote in the beginning of my story: “consider [my criticisms] as the hard words and loving advice of a good friend. Someone who’s being honest with you and wants nothing from you.”

You are, of course, free to disagree with me. But I criticize from a place of good faith.

    • As you yourself pointed out and put forward: nobody cares. Not even here. Tell something that’ll challenge the Incredible India illusion and you end up receiving comparisons with Pakistan and how well they’re really really doing actually.

I didn’t see so far whether you actually visited Pakistan. If you did, please share your analysis here.

      • @AAKhan: no, I didn’t visit Pakistan. I really wanted to, but was unable to get a visa from the Embassy In Delhi. They said I must get one from the Embassy in America. Not to worry, however, as I hope to visit Pakistan sometime next year. And I am very much looking forward to it.

      • Please do, and give an honest opinion. It’s always interesting to hear from non-Pakistanis how they experienced our nation, apart from all the negativity in the media.

    • You wrote perfectly! Your words were carefully chosen. In my observation you provided a very good feed back from a tourist that visited the place having an image & what he/she really experienced and would just like to offer his 2cents to improve his hosts. And you knew very well what you’ll recieve in return. πŸ˜€ Something that the people in this region still need to learn.

      Loved your article, keet writing!

  16. Asher, I would encourage you to visit India, if even once. It is well worth the personal education and edification.

Emperor Babur: you are correct about the Mughal Empire. I would add, however, a note of caution: the empire went downhill once it was run by a narrow minded, but very pious ruler by the name of Aurangzeb. It was his wars against the Hindus in the south that broke the empire for good and led to the vacuum with the British were able to fill. The point is, the Mughal empire was a beacon of enlightenment until religious intolerance took over.

    • Sean,

I have lived in the sub-continent and am well aware of the culture there. It is more or less same in all countries of sub-continent.

I was once living under the illusion that there is a possibility of true friendship between India and Pakistan. But after finding out how India has been busy in eradicating Pakistan through deceipts, insurgencies, or an all out aggression, I realized that it was a false dream.

I used to be very impressed with India’s supposed growth but found out later the realities behind it. For example, I could never think that Pakistan’s nuclear program is better than India. To my pleasant surprise, India was much behind. Not only in nuclear technology but also in other spheres of military warfare.

Over a period of time, I have come to realize the real face of Indians specially the ones from Hindu fundamentalist parties. These Indians have the habit of doing the very thing that they accuse Pakistan of e.g terrorism or fundamentalism but forget how their fundamentalist have killed innocent Pakistanis.

As far as your analysis of Mughal downfall is concerned, I don’t know if religious intolerance could topple empires. It might contribute a factor or two. We are often quoted the Hindu side of history. Hindus are habitual liars and are cunningly deceptive. It could simply be a strong propaganda against the Muslim rulers. Remember, that Babri Mosque incident. These fundamentalists razed the Mosque to the ground on a flimsy ground that it was built over a hindu temple. These fundamentalists are now working on changing Indian history. Since the Brahman’s record look really bad if they are shown as Aryan invaders. They are now “theorizing” that Brahmans had always been in India as indigenous people and they threw the evidences of Western expert as biased opinions of British Raj. Very similar to what they have done to you analysis. They will go to any length to prove that you are wrong.

Don’t let that discourage you from speaking the truth.

      • u r wrong

        1. india always extended a hand in friendship while pakistan spat on it eg. 1999 kargil

2.the reality behind india’s 7.9% growth is its system

3.Muslim fundementalists outnumber hindus by 1000:1. they kill indians, americans, british, danish, etc regularly

3.india is much behind pak in military? sure πŸ˜€ and bangladesh is more advanced than US

4.muslims are known for their narrow minds and intolerance not hindus. hindus are known for their million gods

      • @Asher, I should clarify what I said. What I meant to say was that the primary cause of the downfall of the Mughal’s was the imperial overreach of the Emperor Aurangzeb. There is no question that Aurangzeb was a pious Muslim. I visited his tomb in the Deccan and was very impressed. It is simple, not ornate and was paid for by the money he earned weaving Muslim skullcaps. His private religion was profound and strong. But, he let it cloud his judgment when it came to his non-Muslim subjects and also when it came to waging war on the Hindu kingdoms in the Deccan. After decades of war–much of it unsuccessful the Mughal treasury was broken and empty upon his death. As we saw with the Soviets and as we are seeing with the United States currently, empires fall apart when their treasuries are emptied. So, it was not ‘intolerance’ per se, that wrecked the Mughal Empire, but incessant warfare.

As for the Babri Mosque incident? All I can say is this: there are many Christian cathedrals in the West that were built atop the ruins of previous religious temples. And there are numerous cases in Central Asia–most notably, a mosque in Bukhara, Uzbekistan called the Magghak-i-Attari that was built atop a Buddhist temple and before it a Zoroastraian Fire Temple. There are many such places in Iran as well. The Kabaa in Mecca was a pagan shrine once, too, during the Jahiliya. This is what religions due, when they replace older ones.

But to tear them down? It’s sad. It reminds me of the Bamiyan Buddhas. These were amazing ruins and the common inheritance of mankind, so, I confess to never understanding the religious impulse to raze the Babri Mosque or blow up the Bamiyan Buddhas.

But I do understand the political one. The sad thing is that all over the world we are seeing a rise in religious intolerance in all cultures, even in America we have our fundamentalists who want to go out and kill Muslims. It’s just crazy. Private religion, in my opinion, is a good thing, but public political religion? Not a good thing. It leads to unnecessary deaths and tragedy, as we are seeing all over the world.

Anyway, I am rambling now. But thanks for letting me chat here. It is a pleasure learning from you all and listening.

      • @Sean,

Thanks for your balanced views and clarification of your point of view. I have not studied history in as much detail as I want to, therefore, unable to comment on Aurangzeb and the failure of his empire. I do know that Hindus are particularly biased in their projections of Muslim rulers. Logically speaking, it is the Brahmans (the RULING class) who would have the MOST grievances against Muslims since Muslims took the rule and control from Brahmans. These Brahmans were, earlier, responsible for fighting with indigenous Dravidians and pushing them southwards. That is why we see distinct differences between North and South Indian culture. The latter being the continuation of Dravidians.

I totally agree with you that in the Past people converted the existing religious places into the ones of their own but Kaaba is distinct. Holy Kaaba was NEVER created as a Hindu temple. It became a hindu temple for sometimes which was then restored to its original form during the Prophet Muhammad’s time. Kaaba was built by Abraham in the city of Mecca which was inhabited because of an Islamic event in history. Allah(swt) had ordered Abraham to leave his wife Hagar and the infant Ismail in the desert. Because of the tapping of Ismail’s heels the spring of water gushed forth (known later as Zamzam). It was near this point that Abraham later built kaaba with the help of his son Ismail. This indicates that Ismail was either an adult or a young man to be able to help his father erect such a building. Arabs of this region, later on, became pagans (or Hindus) and placed idols inside of Kaaba.

One thing I want to remind you, there is no such thing as a “political religion”. It is basically our “basic instinct” at work when we see religiously motivated conflicts. Religion in such conflicts is used as a launching pad/ a vehicle. Opponents of religion always say that religion is the cause of many problems of the world. What they fail to realize “conflict” as being the culprit. When two people fight for the same resource, wars happen. Parties tend to add dimensions to it to make their claim more legitimate.

      • very very well said Asher!

      • you initiated all wars and we indians defeated you in all wars! My Pakistani friens in US tells us that in Pakistani text book they say that all wars were intiated by India and we won the wors including 1965 wars. Very funny!!

  17. Here’s a good anecdotal story of how the Indians see other, lower class Indians and how they see themselves: http://www.boingboing.net/2009/12/15/haagen-dasz-opens-no.html

    It’s very sad.

Having said that us Muslim’s only have ourselves to blame for our downfall when we divided ourselves in the name of culture and race therefore inviting the punishment of Allah!.Inshallah we will rise again reclaiming our original status as the most dynamic religious community ever assembled on earth. We must liberate our land from Christian imperialists and re-establish the khalifah, our future is inshallah very bright.
