Pak Heroes – Maj. Abid Majeed ShaheedOctober 30, 2009
Swat is now gradually returning to being land of peace, brimming an essence of happiness; as the serenity prevails, as the bliss reigns, once again. This wasn’t the case a few months ago. The terrorists in Swat, causing misery and pain to the locals, beheading innocent, abducting girls, beating old, did not know that the valiant sons of this soil will soon come for the rescue of populace held hostage.
The terrorists overlooked the fact that Pakistan Army’s soldiers have been at the vanguard always for their homeland; bursting with nationalist spirit, show not a trace of anxiety at presenting fresh blood to further enrich the sanctity of this soil. The heroic story of Major Abid Majeed bears testimony to this reality.
On the momentous morning of May 18, 2009 Major Abid Majeed packed with the spirit of Jihad, prayed to Allah for success in the mission he was to take for the day. He was made responsible for securing the area from Jura to Nazarabad from terrorists hold. While his brother Major Khalid was given the task of recapturing the area from Shalpalam to Jura. Major Khalid’s company successfully captured the area, followed by Major Abid Majeed, who through careful planning and utmost zest secured the area as well.
Subsequently Major Abid Majeed’s company was ordered to move forward. Thirteen vehicles of the company moved to safety however the last vehicle came under severe and accurate firing by the militants, near Nullah bend. The driver of the vehicle embraced martyrdom instantly. No further movement was possible as the route was blocked. The forward troops tried to move back and rescue the trapped soldiers, however due to constant firing by the militants they were unable to do so. The veteran soldier that Major Abid Majeed was, he decided to move back himself to save the lives at stake.
In the massive downpour of bullets he ordered his company to engage the militants as he rushed to the site, dragged the two bleeding soldiers ‘Sepoy Tariq’ and ‘Sepoy Nausherwan’ to shelter. He immediately poured water into their mouths and then started bandaging the wounds to stop loss of blood. Just then his shoulder got exposed and the first bullet hit him. The sepoys who were witnesses to his bravery state that almost ignoring his own injuries, he kept providing first aid to the wounded soldiers. Meanwhile a second bullet hit in his ribs. Unimpeded by the blood gushing out of his own wounds he dragged the soldiers to a safer place. It was during this movement that he was hit by three more bullets and fell down.
While bleeding profusely nearly sure that these were his very last moments, he took the wireless to talk to his brother Major Khalid, who was 100 meters away and said: “Brother I have to pay so much to so and so, do not forget it. Take care of our mother and under no circumstances leave the job of eliminating the terrorists incomplete. I wish I could march on to the streets of Mingora myself and see it free of all terrorists”.
It was then this brave son of Pak soil succumbed to his injuries and embraced Shahadat.
Sepoy Tariq and Nowsharwan cannot control their tears at the mention of Major Abid Majeed’s name. The only words they are able to say is “Why Major Sahib, why not us”.
Shaheed Major Abid Majeed had secured commission in the Pakistan Army on 12th October 1997 and joined the prestigious 19th Punjab Regiment where he embraced martyrdom on 18th May 2009.
