The Day When Kashmir Was Occupied

October 28, 2009

62 years ago on this day (October 27, 1947) India landed its army at Srinagar airport to occupy Kashmir. The disaster would have happened, but could have not continued, if the political foot soldiers, like the one mentioned below, had not been first cultivated by the Indian state. While narrating the events of 1947 in his autobiography ‘My Life and Times'(1992: Allied Publishers, New Delhi, India, p39)The late Syed Mir Qasim, once a puppet chief minister of Kashmir, and himself a front-ranking foot soldier, writes:

“…As they [Indian Army] landed at the airport some of them killed a few Muslims. This shocked and infuriated the local people who were there to welcome the Indian army as their savior. The shocked people thought of carrying their dead ones to Jamia Mosque in a procession. This could have created an uncontrollable situation and turned the people’s anger against India instead of the invaders and perhaps could have given a different direction to the history of Kashmir. No Kashmiri leader, including Sheikh Abdullah, could possibly stem this uprising. But Khawaja Ghulam Mohiuddin Qarra intervened and managed to stop the procession at Lal Chowk. He talked the mob out of its procession plan so convincingly that one of them stood up to shout that his son was among those dead, but he would sacrifice another son if Khawja Qara so demanded. The mob was pacified…”

The two foot soldiers, one who is talking and the other who is being talked about, both are no more. Gone from this world after breathing in their allocated volume of Oxygen. However, the misery their actions, as well as of those like them, brought still persists. We have to take on the burden, do what best we can to end the misery, and secure the future of coming generations.

[This is a press release by a Kashmiri political party]

  1. This was the day when, Pakistani attempt to occupy Kashmir by sending army regulars as tribal raiders, was defeated by the Indian army.

Three wars later, no amount of disinformation campaign by Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir is going to make any difference.

    • Hay! you the “largest democracy” in the world let u go for a pelbisite in kashmir and u will come to know for certain what the kashmirs want.By the way do uknow the number of indian occupation forces in Kashmir. To control every 10 unarmed civilians, including elderly ,women and children u have put one solidier armed with all the lethal weapons in the world.what a brave nation u are.

  2. But the Kashmiris have NEVER really accepted that Indian control either which is apparent from the regular “Pakisan Zindabad” slogans raised during India-Pakistan cricket match and raising of Pakistani flag on Pakistan’s independence day.

You will never be able to subjugate Muslims. There is no point in trying. We, Muslims, are one nation at heart bound with our common allegiance to Allah(swt).

It is much better if you leave us alone and let us live our lives according to whatever system we choose.

    • This happens only in some sunni dominated parts of the valley in srinagar and adjoining areas.
Pakistan has ABSOLUTELY no support in Jammu, ladakh, kargil, Drass which are Hindu, buddhist and shia areas.
BTW the last Indo-pak cricket match in sri-nagar was years ago.
In any case Kashmir is developing more than pakistan. While pakistan is blowing itself up, kashmiris on the Indian side just got a brand new railway line.

      • Yeah and Kashmiri’s were celebrating it as “BLACK DAY”

      • funny they got the railway line so late… tsk tsk tsk

  3. black day is when pakistan occupied a part of kashmir.

    • Ohh really sal/Nikhil…than why were they burning India’s flag and raising Pakistan’s flag on independence day??

  4. Being a Kashmiri, I know which country draws major support here. One Indian commented that we got a new railway line.Developement hardly matters when your kith & kin get bullets. The day Indian PM landed here, there was a complete strike(confirm it by Indian newspapers). Our heart beats for PAKISTAN and we hate India from the core of our hearts.India ‘ll never be able to win our hearts because we ‘ve not even an iota common with them but zillion characters matching PAKISTANI brethren.DIL DIL PAKISTAN JAN JAN PAKISTAN.(fazle54@gmail.Com)

    • You have you grievances, maybe.

But the strike was only in Srinagar and some nearby valley areas!
Why not in ALL of J&K.
Just because some are pro-pak in Kashmir, does not mean the others will agree with you.
If youi love pakistan so much, migrate!

      • @Rjk

First you deny no once supports Pakistan and thn when one does come up you reply ‘Migrate to Pakistan’…height of hypocrisy!
