Haqqani on Pakistan, Islam and Saudis

October 21, 2009

Ambassador Haqqani has been appearing on many fora in the US before and after he became ambassador for Pakistan.

A study of his remarks reveals an interesting perspective he has on Pakistan and the Muslim World. For instance, on April 1, 2005, Cleveland Jewishnews.com quoted Haqqani as having stated: “Muslim world’s problems are much bigger than antagonism to Israel, Jews and Militancy.” He went on to hold the Saudis responsible for almost every problem.

Given how Saudi Arabia is one of Pakistan’s most critical allies, apart from the deep emotive bond between the two Muslim nations, this statement would hardly have gone down well before either Pakistanis or Saudis. But this anti-Saudi theme has been a particular favourite of the ambassador’s. For instance, on an earlier occasion, on March 2, 2004, at the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs he declared that “ Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are two of the US’s most difficult allies … They are not allies at all … but sources of trouble … The fact that (an al Qaeda terrorist) feels so comfortable with Pakistani intelligence officers … is a source of worry in itself.”

Haqqani was also a frequent guest speaker at forums which have been set up by separatists in the US and Canada. His statements in such forums are interesting. For instance, at the Nov 6, 2006 meeting of the World Sindhi Institute, his remarks included his view that “Pakistan is not historical, like France or India, it is a constitutional state. Pakistan was created in hurry and its greatest support was from those areas which did not become part of Pakistan later. So the idea emerged that used Islam as a unifying bond.” Then he went on to add that “Sindhis have a liberal religion” as if somehow the attempt to use Islam as a symbol of unity was opposed by them!

Again, at the same meeting, he explained, “India has 23 national languages but Pakistan was pressing hard for Urdu. Pakistan’s elite decided Islam would be unifying and India an enemy.” He also went on to deride Pakistan further by declaring that “Pakistan is a rent seeking unit from the US, may it be Russia or terrorism, they are available as the most allied ally.” Finally, he attacked the settlers of Balochistan, now the target of killings in that province, by demanding that “Punjabis in Balochistan should learn to respect Balochis and should not side with the government. The way the Army did not help Biharis who took the wrong side and are still there at the mercy of Bengalis. Either you can come back on tanks or on trains as POWs.”

A month later, on December 5, 2006, at the CARR Center for Human rights Policy, Haqqani again gave his view that “Pakistan has become a rented state; it is benefiting from its geographic location. As per the declassified documents, Ayub Khan said, ‘Our army can be yours, if you pay the right price’. We perform certain services and in return get economic benefits.”

Much later, at the Asia Society, New York, on March 27, 2007, with reference to military aid to Pakistan, he expressed the view that “military aid, none of the arsenals, has any relevance to countering Al-Qaeda.” He did state the obvious when he said, on the same occasion, “US pressure is there to do more, which is being resented by people of Pakistan. They see it as American’s war.”

Now which of these quotable quotes of Haqqani’s made it apparent to the Zardari regime that he would be the ideal representative of Pakistan’s interests in the US?

  1. Thank’s a lot to Pakistan Ka Khuda Hafiz website for publishing this post. For such a dingy person i couldn’t find words to praise all of his work which he has done for Pakistan…..for this moment we are’nt taking his sentiments for Islam…but will take it later on.

So guys what do you say about this government. Is they worthy to govern our armed forces? Are they worthy to direct our armed forces? are they worthy to share with them our secrets?

And in the last do they deserve to lead us?

Come on people do something otherwise they will only leave us when they suck all of our blood.

God Bless Pakistan Long Live Pakistan
    Nawaz

  2. This son of a bitch has even said in one of his addresses in US universities and war colleges that US should have bombed Pakistan instead of Iraq and Afghanistan. He is a pure blood traitor. Needs to be removed from his post immediately and must be tried for high treason.

  4. Haqqani might have changed after his marriage to Naz Isphahani who is an Agha Khani and grand daughter of Isphahani(quaid’s colleague).

Many of his utterances seem to be anti-pakistan,but were all dated before his present assignment. Haqqani is an intellectual, may be a rogue one,and one cannot stop him, specially when he is not holding a post, from speaking his heart.Western countries
like frankness and to make inroads, one may speak against his own interests. we have example in BB herself.

Zardari could never have known him personally because there is no match. It is because BB has mentioned Haqqani in her book as a very trusted friend to be proud of,he may have been assigned this job.

Certain of his comments are not altogether wrong. It is fact that Pakistan was also demanded by Muslims of those states in India, which did not become part of Pakistan, for which their third generation is still suffering. Only Sindh and Sarhad supported. In Punjab (East punjabi muslims supported and gave very huge sacrifices), Unioist Party led by Khizr Hayat was in power which was totally agaist Pakistan. To quote Humayun Gohar(in a talk show in August),Khizr was delivering his usual anti-Pak rhetoric,a messenger came with the news that decision about Pakistan has been made,Khizr immediately said”Abhi abhi khabar aayee hai,Jinnah hamara pai(bhai) hai.
That lota cracy is still continuing.”Jannat ya dozkh,Jidhar chawanni ka faida ho”.

Haqqani is also right about Biharis.Their case has just become like Pakestinians. They are paying the price of loyalty to Pakistan.

His warning about Balochistan may seem bitter but right. Not only Punjabis, there are Urdu speaking people in Balochistan. But if the behaviour is of looking them down, and consider ourself as masters, the result is in front of us.

You see how the hatred spreads.Till some time back,
people serving in top govt positions, when they die,the dead body is taken to “Aabai Watan”.That creates a feeling of Dubai(looto aur chalo).

All the above may seem to be harsh. But one thing is sure that unless we believe in”Inna Akramakum indaAllahi Atqakum” ie in the eyes of Allah, those who are more pious are more closer to Him.,things will not change.

While talking of Nation,my deceased father left a cutting of Nawai-Waqt of post Zia period.Sardar Nakai, CM of Punjab, announced his cabinet.Newspaper heading was:18 ministers take oath.So many of them Jat,so much Arain,so much sheikhs and so many Baluch(i.e.none of them Pakistani)

ITNEE NA BARHA PAKIYE DAMAN KI HIKAYAT.

  5. What do you expect from this thief if he has these kind of beliefs. ZARDARI MADARI AND HIS TEAM ARE ALL CORRUPT DACOITS WHO DO NOT BELONG TO PAKISTAN THEY SHOULD BE SENT TO GUANTANAMO BAY

  6. About Mr Haqqani’s statements. Gentlemen, ambassadors are there to project postive image of a country. No where else in the world we see an ambassador who makes a fool of his own country, in front of other people, to gain cheap popularity. This misfortune is indeed ours. So Mr Haqqani should please stop making a laughing stock of Pakistan in front of Americans… and do better than this. There must be many better choices than him to represent Pakistan in America.
