AfPak: Where Empires Go to Die

May 18, 2009

Wilmer Leon

President Obama is also ratcheting up the rhetoric and activity in Pakistan. There’s a significant increase in ground forces, Predator drones and air attacks. In his announcement on March 27th, President Obama referred to the border region of Afghanistan/Pakistan as, “the most dangerous place in the world….This is not simply an American problem – far from it. It is, instead, an international security challenge of the highest order. Terrorist attacks in London and Bali were tied to al-Qaida and its allies in Pakistan, as were attacks in North Africa and the Middle East, in Islamabad and Kabul. If there is a major attack on an Asian, European, or African city, it, too, is likely to have ties to al-Qaida’s leadership in Pakistan. The safety of people around the world is at stake.

President Obama and his advisors should learn from history, some ancient some modern, and not repeat it. This is a region of the world that has never been defeated militarily. It is where empires go to die. The Greeks, Indians, Persians, Mongolians, British, and Russians have tried to hold Afghanistan but never succeeded.

SSG Heroes Killed Eight Talibans Before They Were Shot

May 18, 2009

KAHUTA: Family members of martyred Captain Najam Riaz have made a shocking disclosure about the alleged involvement of an important administrative official of Malakand in the killing of four SSG commandos at the hands of Taliban last week.

The heroic tale of brave commandos reveals how the valiant soldiers had broken the necks of eight Taliban, once they realised that they were about to be beheaded. The mother of Shaheed Captain Najam told The News while sitting in her village house, amid tears in her eyes, that she would have even sacrificed ten sons for the sake of Pakistan and she was proud of her 24-year old son, who before going to Swat had told her not to weep over her body as he knew he was going on a journey of martyrdom.

There are reports that medical and rehabilitation teams from Jamaat Al-Daawa, the Kashmiri organization that used to be active in support of their kin in Indian-occupied Kashmir, have surfaced to help the hundreds of thousands of Pakistani refugees fleeing the terror of insurgents pouring in from Afghanistan, backed by anti-Pakistan forces there.

The Gentlemen Soldiers of Pakistan

May 17, 2009

2-550x375

An interesting and thought provoking article from an Indian writer, Shivani Mohan, where she discusses the human side of soldiers and mentions a beautiful incident in 1965 when Pakistani soldiers had captured Indian territory and a whole village evacuated in face of advancing Pakistani troops, leaving behind 3 elderly Indian citizens. The two elderly men and a woman were well looked after by the Pakistani soldiers until ceasefire was declare and the three were joined by their families..

Pakistanis Remain Defiant: Expats Head Home

May 17, 2009

Mona Sarika

Asma, a Pakistani graduate student studying fine arts in the US and Farooq, her fiancée, a software engineer are excited about heading back home after their graduation. Rather than making a career in the United States, they firmly believe that their skills and knowledge will be of tremendous use in Pakistan. When asked about her future plans, she says, ‘I will go back home to teach and spread the knowledge I have received. My country needs me.’ Farooq feels the same. So instead of taking the job offer in New York from Goldman Sachs, he is going back to Pakistan.

Letter From A Ghazi’s Wife

May 17, 2009

Dear Brother Zaid Hamid,

May Allah give you more strength, as you have touched our (Pakistanis’) hearts, and have brought us together on this platform.

I am a wife, daughter, grandaughter, and daughter in law of army officers. Infact, I’m also the daughter of one of those “chand pagal pakistani’ who are still uncorrupt and working day and night to revive and progress some of our institutions. I have also experienced the tension as a wife, while my husband was serving the nation in Swat. It feels great once people applaud the sacrifices of army personnel.

At this time I would like to point out how some people allege that our soldiers do this for the salaries and land allotments – Trust me you cannot PAY someone to put their lives on the line and to emrace shahadat for our country. Our soldiers unlike our enemies do not fear death cause they know that they are serving for the cause of a nation “PAKISTAN’ which was created in the name of Allah. And because of that, no matter how many hurdles India has thrown in its way, ALLAH HI PAKISTAN KA HAFIZ HAI.

REST ASSURED THAT IT IS INDIA BEHIND SWAT. Hindus have not come out of the complex that they lost their ‘Indian land’ to the Muslims. Rest assured they can never be our friends. This is a message that we have to pass on to our generations and warn them against India’s brutal mentality. It is time that we quit using any indian products (movies, clothes, toiletries).

INDIA MURDABAD.

Pakistan Army Rejects US Guarantees on India

May 16, 2009

‘NO CHANCE of moving troops from Indian border. US guarantees cannot be trusted’ – General Kayani

ashfaq_parvez_kayaniISLAMABAD: The military leadership on Friday told the national political leadership that there was no chance of moving the armed forces from Pakistan’s border with India for their deployment at the western borders.

In a five-hour-long in-camera briefing to the national leadership here at the PM House, the military leadership clearly said that no guarantee from the international community could be accepted.

According to sources, on the query of PML-N Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif about the situation at the eastern borders, the military leadership told the political leadership that the United States had asked for the deployment of forces at the Afghanistan border by moving them from the Indian border and was even ready to give guarantees that India would not make any misadventure against Pakistan. But Pakistan rejected the proposal and made it clear that on the issue of national security, it did not trust any kind of international guarantees.

Zardari to sell part of Pakistan’s Kabul estate

May 16, 2009
  • Pakistan owned 24-acre Kart-i-Parwan estate is considered to be one of the most prestigious assets in the Afghan capital.
  • It housed Pakistan’s embassy till 1995 until it was moved to a rented property in another part of the city because of security reasons.
  • British Government has repeatedly requested to buy this land from Pakistan in the last few years, offering $25m in 2006.
  • Former President Musharraf repeatedly turned the British offers down, on the premise that the prestigious estate would be an asset when security situation improved and it would save nearly $1 million annually in rent.
  • Zardari had been trying to push deal through for some time but the Foreign Office had serious reservations.
  • Sale of the land has now been agreed for an undisclosed price between Zardari and the British High Comissioner.

U.S. Engineering A New Disaster In Islamabad?

May 13, 2009

Ahmed Quraishi

The United States engineered – with President Musharraf’s consent – the ‘BB-Musharraf’ deal that turned Pakistani politics upside down. Now the Americans are planning another disaster that could add to the instability. To Pakistani politicians and military: Let’s push for redefining the game instead of repeating mistakes.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—The signs are not good. Peter Lyall Grant, a senior British diplomat, was seen in Washington a coupe of weeks ago. He landed quietly in the American capital, coming to see Hillary Clinton and Richard Holbrooke.

Grant, or Sir Grant in Britain, is one of the godfathers of the Benazir-Musharraf deal in 2007 that produced the current political setup in Pakistan. While in Washington he must have also quietly met Husain Haqqani, the Pakistani ambassador to Washington and one of the ‘handlers’ entrusted by Washington to ensure that Mr. Zardari is keeping his end of the deal that brought him to power.

Zardari Govt. Turns Down Uranium Deal For Pakistan

May 13, 2009

The Zardari government cited budgetary constraints to refuse uranium from Kazakhstan. But the real story is that the government has accepted aid in exchange for what appears to be a freeze on Pakistan’s advanced nuclear and strategic programs. These were Washington’s conditions. And it is part of a wider pattern.

Haqqani Pushed India Transit Idea…

May 13, 2009

…On Behalf Of Washington

In a highly undiplomatic move, U.S. officials coordinated with Ambassador Haqqani to have the India-Afghan transit trade concession forced on Pakistan. The issue raises once again the perennial question: Does Ambassador Haqqani represent Pakistani interests or is he working for Washington? In March, Mr. Haqqani broke diplomatic norms and national security considerations by arranging a secret, one-to-one meeting between President Zardari and Mr. Holbrooke in Dubai to talk things behind the back of the entire Pakistani government, Foreign Office, and the Pakistani military.

Zardari’s Kindness

May 10, 2009

India Should Ask Him To Hand Over Kashmir, Hunza & Gilgit Too

Just as the tide was turning against the so-called Pakistani Taliban because of loss of public support, comes the news that Asif Zardari has signed a transit trade agreement that gives India the right to overland trade with Afghanistan and beyond – something that even Bangladesh has refused to give to India in the case of trade with Burma. That is the extent to which Zardari’s ‘My Democracy’ can go to accommodate the enemy.

As I predicted in my article “ The Future of Pakistan” only two days ago, it is America’s plan to induct Indian troops into Afghanistan and have a shorter supply line from India to Afghanistan via Lahore and Peshawar. Clearly that would be resisted and not just by the Afghan Taliban. This transit agreement is the red rag to the bull that would expand the scope of the Civil War in Pakistan and create ‘opportunities’ for the USA. If the Pakistani political parties do not unite to oppose this agreement, the people will. That is a prospect that should be avoided. Would the armed forces rise to the occasion and save Pakistan from Asif Zardari?
