Wounded Soldiers Recall Stiff Resistance
May 22, 2009“There were checkpoints, bases and training centres in the mountains. We were clearing and destroying all this. They positioned snipers in holes made out of the walls of houses. They used civilians as human shields. They used to attack from houses and roofs.”
“They are well-equipped, they have mortars, they have rockets, sniper rifles and every type of sophisticated weapon,” said Lt. Zaigham.“I am certain that foreign elements are behind these militants. Can I ask something very simple — who are their sponsors? What are their sources of funding? Who runs their logistics?”
RAWALPINDI: They used to attack early in the morning or after dark and would always go for an ambush, said Lieutenant Zaigham, wounded in battle with the Taliban and lying in the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).
Zaigham, who did not give his full name, sustained shrapnel wounds from fierce street fighting in the Swat valley and is a patient at the CMH Rawalpindi. Lying in bed with bandaged wounds, he and fellow soldiers spoke of intense battles against heavily-armed insurgents, who put up stiff resistance.
From May 4 to May 17, when Zaigham was wounded, his unit advanced slowly fromKhwazakhela in northern Swat to the nearby town of Matta, which has long been under Taliban control. “There were strong resistance during the entire journey but we managed to clear the area. They buried mines and planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) every 50 metres,” he said.
“There were checkpoints, bases and training centres in the mountains. We were clearing and destroying all this. “They positioned snipers in holes made out of the walls of houses. They used civilians as human shields. They used to attack from houses and roofs.
“They are well-equipped, they have mortars, they have rockets, sniper rifles and every type of sophisticated weapon,” said Zaigham.“I am certain that foreign elements are behind these militants. Can I ask something very simple — who are their sponsors? What are their sources of funding? Who runs their logistics?” he said.
Residents trapped by the fighting in Swat have also said the Taliban dug trenches and were well- armed. US-based Human Rights Watch has accused the Taliban of using human shields by preventing civilians from leaving.
Zaigham was wounded when a rocket shell exploded in Matta and shards of shrapnel sliced into his shoulder and leg. He needs constant care.“Some of my colleagues embraced Shahadat (martyrdom) in this fight and some were wounded, but we forced the militants to retreat,î”he said.
Army says more than 1,050 militants and 58 soldiers have been killed. Wounded soldiers who spoke to AFP said they were willing to lay down their lives for what commanders have declared a fight to eliminate militants.
Soldier Haseeb Ahsan, 26, was among those flown into Peochar, in northern Swat last week in a bid to open a new front and wrest back control of a Taliban bastion and alleged stronghold of Swat Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah. The airborne troops admitted they came under heavy fire.
“We landed in the jungle. Militants ambushed our group. I received two bullets in my right thigh, but I kept on firing,” he said. “My wish was to die in the way of Allah and for my country. I will definitely go back and hit them hard,” he said.
One of the younger soldiers, Muhammad Asif, 18, said he was wounded last week in Swat’s main town of Mingora, where the Taliban are still in full control. “It was midnight. I was standing in front of my trench, when I was shot. They always attack secretly. I wanted to tell them do not attack like jackals, attack like men,” he said. “When I was hit, I returned fire and they ran away. I want to go back, I wish I could become a martyr for my country,” he said.

@ Imran
Have you guys ever considered that it is rather hard to build a modern nation using your religion as the sole basis for its existence? You are bound to get in trouble with other countries who don’t share your religious fervor especially if you don’t have any other ideology besides your religion to fall back on.
I also find it amazing that in this modern era, there are people still quoting from ancient religious texts to predict future events, when in their everyday life they flout the same religious texts and their teachings.
I wonder if it is too late to think of Pakistan as a moderate modern republic drawing inspiration from Islam but not overly dependent on it. Of course, India is not perfect either but at least
@ Indiana Jones
You need to know the ‘clear’ message of Islam. I don’t know why will we get in trouble if we don’t share the same religious views with other countries.
Ancient religious texts, it might be for you not for us. As for flouting religion you are a Hindu/Christian, don’t you read Geeta/bible which has in it be good with others, don’t lie etc. Are you always good with others and have never lied in your whole life. Nobody is perfect and humans are bound to commit sins and make mistakes.
Gandhi was a Hindu and don’t you wonder why he said he dreamt of ruling like Hazrat Umar R.A. He was a very conservative Muslim and under his rule within ’3′ years there was not a single beggar left and people used to search for poor people so that they can give Zakat (Compulsory charity on Muslims). Jews and Christians lives in harmony and were treated equally under his rule.
Some people who don’t even have the basic knowledge of Islam have tarnished it’s image because of which non-Muslims think that anyone who is a conservative Muslim is probably a terrorist/extremist or is doing something wrong.
it’s awaam seems to have a voice that enables it to throw out governments that don’t perform and reward those who do.
@ IM
Thanks a lot for your well-thought response. I really appreciate it. However, I didn’t suggest that you have to share others’ religious views.
I am simply suggesting that if your entire being and nationhood rests on Islam, it is a rather unique stance, because most modern states do not highlight a single religion as much.
Maybe this is the reaons why rest of the world has so much difficulty understanding the true Islam, which according to most muslims is a very peaceful religion.
@ Indiana Jones
Islam says ‘Deen (Religion) or duniya (world affairs) sath le kar chalo’. If a person goes into a cave and keeps worshipping his whole life he will be rewarded less compared to a person who works, is married feeds his family etc and even fulfils his religious obligations.
Our entire being and nationhood resting on Islam simply means following the Islamic principles and laws. Feeding the poor is mandatory, You cannot go to sleep until your stomach is full but your neighbour is hungry this is considered a sin, Rights to everyone regardless of religion etc. It’s not about bombing non-Muslims nations or destroying/fighting them at every given chance.
Like the Prophet Muhammad P.b.u.h once said when he came back from a war: ((We came back from the smallest Jihad to the Biggest Jihad. The Jihad of the hawa (wrong desire) and nafs (the quarrel self).
Which means warding off evil desires is considered the biggest Jihad.
It’s mainly got to with the Islam Phobia created by the media. Muslims/Islam are the hot topic now a days. Like when a Muslim lady in US said she’ll lead the prayers and Muslims were against it, everybody started talking how women are oppressed/no rights. Don’t they get it like there can be No women pope/priest or women Pandit or women Rabbi there cannot be a female Imam.
@ Indiana
Something I want to add Islamic laws/principles which should be in a leader are layed down.
Think about people before yourself, think about country, not to touch money in the national treasure, do what is best for your country not be dictated terms etc basically all the qualities which every person wants in the leader of there own country .In olden days people used to run away from being elected as a leader because they were God fearing and they knew they would have to answer about even a ‘single’ person who sleeps empty stomach. Nowadays people don’t even know how to run a grocery are nominating themselves for ruling countries and EVERYONE wants to be a leader.
Islam says don’t fear from countries larger than yours and with more army, prepare yourself and than leave everything on Allah. In Pakistan over 700 civilians have died in US drone attacks, why isn’t the government ordering the Army to shoot down drones? 2 million people displaced, army is fighting. Where is Zardari? Foreign trips. One years expenses for the president house kitchen (only) 12 crore. What are the ministers doing? Going to Dance bars or topless bars in New York. Has this government done anything except begging?
Get them to answer under the Islamic law. If they have to be flog, do it in front of everyone, if they need to be hanged, do it. After that which corrupt leader will dare to come.
But instead under the NRO all the criminal records of leaders are wiped out and if army takes over every western countries arms will be wide open to hug zardari and his team of thugs.
Assalam-0-Alaikum,
MashALLAH the pak army is advancing and its very encouraging to see the patriotic comments by the best army in the world, InshALLAH we will win and would get rid of this nuisance … and i pray to ALLAH that if my country needs me, we also go fight these miscreants along with the army !
Actually IJ if you had read the history of Islam you’d realise that Muslim’s have lived peacefully with non-Muslim’s for centuries.A true Muslim will never force his religious views on anyone but when Hindu’s insult Islam then a befitting reply is required.
Hindu’s also believe in certain prophecies like “kalki avtaar” but generally arn’t as passionate as their faith as us Muslim’s.There is no moderate or terrorist Islam rather Islam is Islam full stop, take it or leave it!.Labels are created by media for their own agenda however until injustice on Muslim people prevails this fight for liberation will continue.Only justice will end terrorism and nothing else but let me assure you that Muslim’s are more furious at our own inept leaders then anyone else!
If we want to implement true Islamic law in our nations then that’s none of your business.
Thanks again guys for your thoughtful replies. From what I understand so far, it seems that there is a disconnect between Islamic teachings and their implementation. For example, Islam teaches equality among people, rich helping poor, neighbors looking after each other, jihad with the evil inside us etc.
However, how many muslim countries actually implement all these things? Or how many muslims follow these teachings in their day-to-day lives? In fact, no non-muslim country has implemented these things perfectly either, despite all religions preaching similar things. Since, all of us are actually imperfect human beings, shouldn’t we acknowledge this fact and then do our best to stay on the straight path?
Imran, I am not asking why you implement Islam in your own country. That’s your own business absolutely and no one has any right to interfere. However, when you have to deal with other countries, you probably need to be more pragmatic and open-minded. I think it may be a bit impractical to say that you will only listen to Islamic teachings when dealing with non-muslim or not overly religious nations.
@Indiana Jones
Yes true. Like you said NO Muslim country in the world follows the Islamic (Sharia) law completely.
Good and bad people are everywhere, if everyone (all religions) would be following there respective teachings and following the straight path this world would be paradise as every religion teaches tolerance and love.
The only thing we can do is advise people and leave the rest on God. Try our best to implement the teachings of our religion in our daily lives because in the end we are the ones who have to be answerable to God for our deeds.
Regards!
Islam is perfect but Muslim’s are not!!.I totally agree with IJ that the law of the land should be followed by all citizens thus if Muslim’s are living in non-Muslim countries then they must adjust to society which they do!
Pakistan does not implement Islam whatsoever rather politicians use it as a vaccum for their own agenda’s.The famous Quranic quote that “Let there be no compulsion in religion” is Islam’s position on such matters….
Again IJ you have spoken unwisely because the Qur’an says that non-Muslim’s have a right to believe without fear!.That Muslim people must deal with them justly on all matters!.Do the Muslim nations like Malaysia,UAE,Indonesia,Morocco,Turkey and Pakistan not have relations with non-Muslim countries, certainly they do!.
salam ,
hi there, Pakistan alhamdulilah is the most peaceful nuclear nation in the world…..and maintaining its status as the one as compared to the ruthless america, israel and UK who have used the nuclear weapons in no of wars against innoceent nations,,,,,which can be termed as henious crimes against humanity……we should also be concerned about the unsafe israeli nuclear weapons which can fall in the hands of Hezbullah who very clearly dominated the Israeli terrorist forces in Israel not very long ago
“Qur’an says that non-Muslim’s have a right to believe without fear!.That Muslim people must deal with them justly on all matters!”
Can anyone please explain the terms Kaffir and Jaziya to me?
@ Indiana Jones
Muslims have to pay mandatory 2.5% Zakat (Charity) of all there assets and non-Muslims pay Jaziya instead of Zakat. So a form of taxation is levied on both muslims and non Muslims.
After a Non-Muslim has paid Jaziya a Muslim is ordered to protect them even if it requires him to give his life.
As for Kafir – ‘Kafir’ is derived from the word ‘kufr’, which means to conceal or to reject. In Islamic terminology, ‘Kafir’ means one who conceals or rejects the truth of Islam and a person who rejects Islam is in English called a ‘non-Muslim’.
Every religion calls non-believers by some title so there is no need to get upset about it!.”Kaffir” means denier or a non-believer in Islam just like Hindu’s have the word “Nastik”.
“Jizya” is just a name for tax paid by non-Muslim’s living in Muslim lands in return for not only being protected but excused from being in the military amongst other things.
Certainly,Muslim’s also pay tax in their countries but it has a different name.
Thanks guys. A couple more questions… Is Jaziya practised even today anywhere? If yes, what is the need for such a tax based on religion, when most modern states have their own tax laws and revenue systems?
Also does Quran actually justify killing, persecution and forceful conversion of Kaffirs?
@ Indiana Jones
I honestly don’t have idea as to which countries practice Jaziya presently. It is not basically
religion based but it was enforced as to have equality among everyone belonging to the same
land. Everyone had to put there share in the development of the land.
Both non-Muslims and Muslims were required to pay tax in Islamic countries. The Muslim tax was
called “Zakat”, which was much more broad. Non-Muslims did NOT have to pay any zakat on any of
their property, livestock, produce or crops while Muslims –did-. Zakat also varied depending on
the Muslim’s situation, depending on the size of property, number of live stock, amount of savings, on average, the Muslim paid more taxes than the non-Muslim. Besides an average of Muslims paying more taxes, Muslims also had to pay with their lives, they had to join the army and defend the country, whereas non-Muslims in the country were not required to enlist, again displaying the price for the Muslims was higher than for the non-Muslims. In fact if at times non-Muslims took part in battle they were exempt from paying Jaziya but the Muslim still had to pay Zakat (Muslim Tax). Both Muslims and non-Muslims alike faced force if the tax was not paid.
The Quran prohibits forceful conversion, here is a verse from the Quran stating that: “There is no compulsion and coercion in regard to religion. The right thing has been made distinct from the wrong thing: now whoever rejects taghut and believes in Allah has taken a firm support that never gives way.” [2:256]
Islam does not justify killing and persecution of any human being and a verse from the Quran says that: “… he who slays a soul unless it be (in punishment) for murder or for spreading mischief on earth shall be as if he had slain all mankind; and he who saves a life shall be as if he had given life to all mankind…” [5:32]
Islam prohibits extremism, prophet Muhammad P.b.u.h said, “I warn you of extremism in the Religion for indeed those that came before you were destroyed due to their extremism in the
religion.”
The Hadith (the sayings of Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h is referred as Hadith) deems extremism to be distorting the religion. That is because it turns it away from its characteristic temperament of ease, facility and moderation to another temperament, burdening the people to excess and
bringing hardship upon them. As Allah swt says in the Holy Quran “Allah wants your life to be full of ease, not hardship.” [2:185]
Here you can read the rules of Jihad according to Islam. Something I want to mention which is not mentioned on this site is that Jihad can ONLY take place if a leader of the country orders
or the religious head of the country orders: http://www.hweb.org.uk/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=18
Certainly Islam condemns killing people of other religions. You wouldn’t see so many non-Muslim’s living in UAE,Saudi,Turkey,Malaysia etc if they felt under such threat….
For crying out loud there is no such thing as forceful conversions!.I can convert you to Islam at gunpoint but as soon as i leave you’d reconvert back to your original faith moreover how can anyone control anothers heart or mind!!?
Nowhere is Jizya practiced as it should be but their is a particular percentage that non-Muslims pay.Other religions like Hinduism and Christianity do not have political, healthcare or financial systems so there is nothing to implement!.Muslim’s arn’t stopping the West from Christian financing or India from Hindu financing so take it up with your leaders!
Islam is a complete system that governs absolutely everything from faith to politics….food to healthcare and marriage to divorce etc…!
