Pakistan: ‘Principle Nuclear Threat’ – Russia
April 11, 2009Washington: Describing Pakistan as the “principle” nuclear threat to Russia, an eminent foreign policy and security expert has claimed that Moscow would support any US endeavour to take away Islamabad’s atomic weapons in case of any destabilisation in the Islamic nation.
“Russian authorities for many years have been indicating that Pakistan was a much more serious problem, both for nuclear proliferation and for nuclear terrorism, than Iran,” Alexei Arbatov, Chairman of the Non-Proliferation Programme of Carnegie Moscow Centre, said at a recent seminar here.
“Russia has been living already for more than a decade within reach of Pakistani nuclear missiles and without any means to defend against them. So Russia considered and considers Pakistan to be the principal threat from the point of view of nuclear proliferation,” he said.
Arbatov was a member of the Russian Parliament from 1994 to 2003 and Deputy Chairman of the Defence Committee. Author of several books, he is also a member of the Advisory Council to the Foreign Minister and heads a panel on strategic planning for the Scientific Board of the Security Council of Russian Federation.
DNA: World: Russia considers Pakistan its principal nuclear threat
Referring to the improving Indo-US ties in the last few years, Arbatov said Russia would not try to do a similar thing with Pakistan, as is being said in certain quarters, to counter the coming together of India and the US.
“That does not command any respect or any support. That’s — of the few things of which I’m sure that Russia will not do such a U-turn,” he asserted.
“I think that Russia would support whatever may be done to stabilise Pakistan, to have some precautions and some tentative planning to take away Pakistani nuclear weapons, one way or the other, if the country becomes totally destabilised,” Arbatov said.
However, he said “India and Iran would be much more important American partners in dealing with the situation of Pakistan and China”.

thanks alot to ayub khan and liquat ali who instead of making good relations with neighbouring countries wanted to befriend America.
ZA bhutto was the man who the soviets trusted
We should not keep on bashing the history. It was not Zia ul Haq, or Liaqat Ali Khan, who started Afghan Jihad against Russia. Rather it was Mr Z A Bhutto who invited Eng Gulbadeen Hikmatyar and Ahmed Shah Masood to Pakistan and groomed them as possible leadership of Jihad against Russians. It has been proved beynd any doubt that there was no invitation from Russia at all rather we tried our level best to seek invitation from both the nations. Americans were generous enough to extend this invitation which Russians plainly refused. Agha Shahi in his last interveiw to media, has categorically clarified that there was no invitation from Russia at all. It is the same level of truth as of the appointment of Ms Benazir Bhutto as assistant secretary level without any competition. Daughter of Makhdoom Ameen Faheem has been appointed at the same designation.
So pls dont deny the history.
Keep crying about the ‘threat’ a**hole. We have more than one country to worry about from that very same perspective. Not a snowballs chance in hell anybody but our military will ever get their hands on our nuclear arsenal, just like things should be.
There is hardly a surprise in this story for Pakistanis. Soviets were humiliated – by none other than the Afghan Mujahideen, Pakistanis, and the US – in their Afghan misadventure of December 1979. The soviets got a deep scar during the Afghan war that proved fatal and made the USSR a history. Ideal for the Russians will be a scenario where the US and Pakistan be fighting against each other with Afghanistan as the battlefield. Who really knows the real players/masterminds behind the plan to drag the US into tough and remote Afghan theater – a historical butcher house (moat-ghaat) for the superpowers of past. It is indeed a test of wisdom for the US leadership to carefully steer their country out of the Afghan mess safely without getting a similar fatal scar that cracked the defunct USSR. It is a well known historical secret that invaders enter Afghanistan by their own choice but can leave that country only by the permission of Afghani people.
I used to regard the Russians as a smart and visionary nation but they appear more like short-sighted jerks. First a mega-blunder of venturing out into Afghanistan and then the way they handled their Afghan occupation reflect their raw nature. The above article in this posting articulates their stupidity yet again. Russian expertise in vital science and technological fields at USSR times could not really sustain their economy as it should have. Among other reasons, one very big one was their inability to market their products into cash-rich Middle Eastern countries. That was in contrast with the case of Japan, America, and European countries that flooded the Middle Eastern markets with their products to get the hug benefits. By earning hard currency through these exports, they ensured getting their share in petro-dollars on one hand and sustaining/expanding/modernizing their productivity on the other hand. As a result of almost nill exports to warmer countries, the products in ex-USSR were only suitable for the users in cold regions. The economy of USSR could not really bear the burden of Afghan war and collapsed. The disastrous soviet occupation of Afghanistan by itself was aimed at getting an access to warm waters. Now the Russians had an opportunity to get that access to warm waters through Gwadar without spending a penny, firing a single bullet, and sacrificing a single life. But these dummies issue a statement or two against Pakistan from time to time and thus reminding the Pakistanis that Russians should be barred from getting any benefit from Gwadar port. Anyhow, it’s their own choice.
Given the fact that Russian population is shrinking and they will soon be at the verge of collapse as a nation. They should import Pakistani men and allow them to get married with Russian women. They will be able to get nine kids per six years and shrinking population will start ballooning in no time. The Russians can then get assured access to Pakistani Gwadar port as a bonus.
Well Mr Jabbar, then what about those ladies at home which would be left with no grooms at home, either going phychos or getting invloved in social evils. Female population in Pakistan is 52 per cent, male are already a scary commodity over here. When under the Hindu ritual, poligamy is considered as more than a sin or cime in our society (of course under the leadership of Raana Liaqat Ali Khan and Asima Jehangir type phonetics). Dont you think that in this way, you would be spoiling the basic fiiber of this society?????
@ A Jabba
Russians should import Pakistani men and allow them to get married with Russian women.?
what the hell are u babbling about!
@ Alexcie Arbatove, Chairman of the “programmed”
Non-proliferation programme of Carnegie
(US endowment)Moscow Center, orchestrated
bullshit paid by USA.
@ A Jabbar,
are you not a retired Family planning recruit
during Nusrat Bhutto’s ” Nas-bandi ” programme
launched by PPP in early 70s ?
are you still active in present day son-in-law’s
establishement, reducing population in Fata and
NWFP ? Sir !
@ Ayesha Butt,
your informations are logical and based on
facts about Russia’s case.
Talibans ( pure jproduct of JUI-F)were sent to
afghanistan during 1994 as pre-election deal of
BB with JUI-F who voted for Baby Bhutto on
condition that Fazulu would get Governorship and
Taliban be sent ot Afghanistan to share power !
all planned & appoved by BB, JUI-F and Clinton !
But the fact is that if Gulbodin Hikmatyaar and
Ahmed Shah Mehsood were given a valid chance to
run Afghanistan, the scenario would have been
entirely different, but they were systematically
prevented by US and her alliance opium mafia.
First of all, what weight does Arbatov has in Russian government. Pakistan is an observe in SCO, an organization with China and Russia as its member.
Russia seems interested in establishing relations with Pakistan but is reluctant because of its long friendship with India. It is in the interest of Russia to have good relations with Pakistan and have a piece of the Arabian ocean pie. Past animosities are a thing of the past. Russia was not a traditional enemy of Pakistan like the way God Damn India is. Russians only favoured Indian interests over Pakistani ones.
The thing to ask is what the interest of Russia is in this region. What is the interest of Iran in this region? Why Iran is not supporting Pakistan? Why Iran has been and still is more friendly to India? Why did Iran developed the port of Chabahar in competition to Pakistan’s Gwadar? These are all the points that makes one wonder if Iran is truly a friend of Pakistan.
Ideally I would love to have a very very strong bond between Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, other Muslim Central Asian states, Russia and China.

lets take a look at Pakistan’s history….. during 60′s …. Pakistan was considered a europe of South Asia… our road were washed daily…. and there was prosperity and pakistan’s international position was Excellent…. Now look at pakistan…present day china was liberated(49) 2 years after pakistan 47….
china started industrialization in 70s….
Malaysia present day muslim superpower in knowledge, education and economy…. was formed in 63….
when indians used to visit pakistan during 60s they were amazed by pakistans development.
<<<<>>>
now look how low pakistan has gone ….
and where are china, malaysia….
———————–
Russian Dream is to get to warm waters in the arabian sea…
china is our great friend… and we could really benefit from our chinese brother’s hard work and smart business success…. for pakistans benefit…
but for no reason we are fight a bullshit war with ghost in our NWFP and baluchistan….
and destroying a great opportunity that comes only in thousands of years….for economic revival…
small countries like pakistan dont get too many chances… or is not a cowboy to threat other countries or to create consipiracies to attack smaller countries for economic benefit…
or better yet to stop other small countries from getting economic independence…and prosperity…
the responsibility lies directly on our leadership both political and military…
they should not think that a Real Super power china is gonna wait forever for pakistan to take care of her problems….
china is a gaint…made by their peoples hard work, great sacrifice, and smartness….
russia also needs warm water access…so does central asia…and afghanistan…
just imagine how much benefit there is for pakistan and its leaders are also gonna be well paid if the use this economic opportunity…
but they sit and are trying to avoid this economic opportunity just cuz they are afraid of another ghost superpower from ancient times USA…
if today china stops giving money to USA … there goes your fake media portrayed super power fiasco….
another thing pakistani leadership is scared of is that if pakistan becomes economic power in the region it will strengthen the middle class of the country and that is also not accepted by these elite class assholes… just cuz they wont have any one to monkey around any more…
…. but times have changed….like always….
once india china trade starts…. pakistan will become africa overnight… cuz there will be nothing left… pakistan will be flooded with china india products… china wont need gwadar any more…
and china pakistan will move away cuz there would be hardly any economic relations between the 2 countries….
and the world of today and tommorrow… only economic relations are the basis of good relations..
